Chapter 25: Thumbprint

Ezio didn't answer him.

He couldn't.

He looked up at me over Ozzie's head, still on his knees on the marble, and waited.

"Tonight," I said, "we're going to Nonna's. All of us. It's Christmas."

Ozzie nodded.

He didn't let go of Ezio's hand all the way down the aisle.

Coco rode out on Ezio's shoulders in her red coat, waving at the Barones.

The twins slept in their old room in the Garden District.

His mother sat in the chair between their beds until three, just to look at them.

I slept in the guest room.

Ezio slept down the hall.

I know because I heard his door, and I heard him not come out of it.

On Christmas morning Coco was up at five-thirty, standing on the end of my bed.

"Is it time? Ozzie says it's not time. Is it time?"

There were presents under the tree in the parlor.

Ezio had put it up at two in the morning, by himself, after we went to bed.

It leaned a little to the left.

Coco got a red leash to go with her red collar.
