Chapter 30: Terms
Ezio's mother said, "I'll make coffee," and walked straight past me into Fia's tiny kitchen.
She didn't look at her son once.
Her ears were pink.
Ozzie came in, sat on the arm of the couch and opened his notebook.
Coco sat on the floor with the leash in her lap.
Ezio stood by the broken upright in his trousers, his arms folded over his bare chest.
"Go ahead," he said.
Ozzie read it out in his trial voice.
"Terms. Number one. A dog."
"A real one," Coco said. "Not a robot. Not a leash for a man."
"Number two. Sunday piano. Everybody at Nonna's after lunch. Mom plays three songs, and then Nonna makes her stop."
From the kitchen, Ezio's mother said, "Correct."
"Number three. No secrets." Ozzie looked up. "Not even big ones. Not even to keep us safe."
The room got quiet.
Ezio looked at me.
I nodded.
"Number four," Ozzie said. "Dad learns to cook one thing."
"One thing," Ezio said.
"Pancakes. Real ones. Not coasters."
"That's a hard term."
