Chapter 11: It Isn't Enough

I picked up the petition.

I walked it out the front door, past the consigliere, to the two men on my sidewalk.

"Call him," I said. "Tell him to come and read what he signed."

The bigger one looked at the page and went pale.

Teo was on Taylor Street in ten minutes.

The consigliere had followed me out. He stood under my awning buttoning his camel coat, perfectly calm.

The florist was in her doorway, and the butcher was in his.

The deli sisters had come out onto the sidewalk with their arms folded, both of them.

I held out the petition.

Teo read it standing in the street.

I watched him see his own name, and the stamp beside it.

"I didn't sign this," he said.

"I know," I said. "I watched your face."

He turned to the consigliere.

"Where's the stamp?"

The man spread his hands.

"Teo. Listen. Cassio came to me with a solution. You're throwing away the chair, four million dollars and a partner for a girl the lab says is nobody."

"I was protecting your house. The children come to you, the church wife raises them, the Table is happy, and in a year you get everything back."

"Where's the stamp?"

The consigliere reached into his coat, slowly, and took out a small brass seal.

Teo held out his hand.

Teo closed his fingers around it and looked at his two men on the sidewalk, and the third getting out of the car.

"Listen to me," he said, not loudly. "This man forged my name on a paper to take my children from their mother. As of now he doesn't work for this family. Nobody drives him. Nobody returns his calls. Anybody who does business with him does business with Cassio, and can go work for Cassio."
