Chapter 24: The Feast of the Table
We took it to the Table nine days later, on Christmas Eve.
An hour before the Feast, my grandmother called me up to her bedroom.
She held out her right hand.
"Take it off," she said. "My knuckles are too old."
I worked the emerald off her finger, slowly, while she swore at me in Italian.
She pushed it onto mine.
"Mamma with the green ring," she said. "Who never sleeps and never loses. Now go downstairs and don't lose."
The Feast of the Table was the one night the five families ate together with everyone.
Wives, mothers, grown sons, a few grandchildren under the table.
Seven fishes, white candles, the good silver.
My twins slept in a laundry basket by the fire, in matching red.
Every old woman in the room found a reason to walk past it.
Benedetta sat beside them with the frying pan on the floor at her feet.
Ruggero came at eight.
He wasn't consigliere anymore, so he didn't sit at my grandmother's right hand.
