They came one at a time, the way they'd sat down in 1962.
The South Side Don kissed the emerald and said nothing.
The Don from Cicero came last.
He stood in front of me for a long moment, and his wife watched him from her chair.
Then he bent and kissed it, quick and hard.
"Merry Christmas, Donna," he said.
"Merry Christmas," I said. "You'll still get your vote."
My grandmother laughed so hard the old bodyguard had to fix her oxygen.
Two weeks into January, Carlotta came back to Taylor Street with a camera.
It was Saturday, at ten, the busiest hour of the week.
The front room had reopened four days after New Year's, fresh paint, new glass in the storeroom window.
The line went out the door again.
She didn't walk past it this time.
She stood on the sidewalk in front of my window, in a new white coat.
Beside her stood a woman with a microphone and a man with a camera on his shoulder.
A TV gossip show, Benedetta said, from the register. The kind that ran after midnight.
"They paid her," Benedetta said. "Watch. She's going to cry."
