Chapter 18: The Coin
The head deckhand's right hand was set in three pieces of metal at Mercy Hospital.
The surgeon said he would hold a coffee cup by summer.
He would not hold a boat hook again. I sat by his bed on Friday and Saturday and said nothing that helped.
His wife held my hand at the foot of the bed and told me it was not my fault.
She said it slowly, and she was still working at believing it.
On Sunday morning I drove to St. Mary's in McKees Rocks with my father.
It was the church where my grandmother's coffin had gone up the steps.
The coffee hour was in the basement hall, with folding tables and a long steel urn.
I had a plan. I had written it on the back of a deposit slip.
Bartos Towing would carry his full wages for the year and pay every bill the hospital sent.
