Chapter 21: Port Ellery Again
Alessia's POV
Nonna had waited for the ground to settle before she set Mauro's stone, and she would not have it done by a stranger.
The two of us stood in the little cemetery above Port Ellery on Saturday morning, with Luca between us in a yellow raincoat.
The stone leaned in a wheelbarrow beside the grave.
It was plain gray granite, with his name and two dates.
Below them she had asked the mason to cut one line: He asked how she was.
"Eight years that man ran their boat," Nonna said, in her small hard voice. "Every Sunday he phoned me and said he'd asked one person that week how she was. Mostly it was you."
"I know."
"I never met you until you came to my door with a belly."
"I know, Nonna."
"He'd have liked this."
I could not answer.
The ferry horn sounded, far down the hill, and we both looked toward the harbor.
A man was walking up the road from the dock.
He wore a black overcoat and no hat, and he carried a bunch of grocery-store carnations in his good hand.
His other arm was out of the sling now, though he held it close to his side.
He walked slowly, and he did not look up from the road until he reached the cemetery gate.
"Is that him?" said Nonna.
"That's him."
"He's smaller than I thought."
"Don't say that, he can hear you."
"Let him."
Santo stopped at the gate.
He stood there with his hand on the iron, looking at the old woman in black, and he took off his coat and folded it over the wall.
"Signora Tedesco," he said. "I'm Santo Barone."
"I know who you are."
