Chapter 4: Sign It
Santino set my drafting case on the corner of Nathaniel's plan chest.
Tripod kept growling under it.
"You left this," Santino said. "I thought you'd want it."
It was the case Mama gave me when I passed my license exam.
Brown leather, my initials stamped on the flap, the corners worn pale.
It had sat in a closet in Lake Forest for three years because he didn't like clutter in the study.
"Thank you," I said. "You can go."
He looked around the studio.
The cracked tile floor. The bad chairs. The old bakery ovens Nathaniel used as a bookshelf.
"So this is where you went."
"This is where I work."
"My wife doesn't work in a bakery."
Nathaniel had been leaning against his desk with his arms crossed.
"It's a studio," he said mildly. "The bakery closed in 1987. Sadly."
Santino looked at him for the first time.
It was the look he gave waiters who brought the wrong wine.
"And you are?"
"Nathaniel Adler. I own the bakery." He didn't uncross his arms. "You're the concrete guy."
Livia's mouth twitched.
Santino turned back to me.
"Here's what happens," he said. "You come home tonight. You wear black for the year, the way your mother would want. You come to Sunday dinner. Nobody mentions the gala again."
"And then?"
"And then you're my wife, and you have everything you had before."
"I had a husband who took my phone while my mother died."
His eyes went flat.
"I'm offering you a way back with your dignity."
"You're offering me the closet my drafting case was in."
