Chapter 18: The Guest List
The gun came out of my uncle's coat, small and black, in a hand that did not shake.
He did not point it at me.
He pointed it down the platform at my husband, who had just stood up with his father's ring on his finger.
I heard myself scream Tancredi's name.
The shot was very loud in the hall.
Remo had been standing behind my husband's chair since the soup, with his hands folded.
He moved faster than I had ever seen a big man move.
He put his shoulder between them.
The bullet turned him half around, and he went down on one knee with a grunt.
"Remo!"
He looked up at me with a grey face and said, "Don't make a fuss, Mrs. Falzone."
Then Tancredi was across the platform.
I did not see him cross it.
He took his uncle's wrist in one hand and bent it back.
The gun fell on the white cloth and slid between the plates.
He put Ignazio down on the table among the veal and the glasses, with a forearm across his chest.
The ice swan went over and burst on the floor.
For the first time in his life Tancredi raised his voice.
"Don't move."
Eighty people did not move.
He did not hit him.
He did not pick up the gun.
He held his uncle on the wreck of the dinner, breathing hard, and looked down at his face.
Ignazio looked back.
There was no kindness left in it.
I had been eating from that man's fork for three years, and I saw him for the first time.
"I made you," Ignazio said. "I fed you. I wiped your nose, you ungrateful boy."
"You killed her father."
"Her father was a stubborn fool." He said it loudly, and the whole hall heard him.
"He had a girl and a head for numbers and he would not give her to this family," Ignazio said. "I asked him three times. Three times he said no to me, in my own deli."
