Chapter 9: What the Don Owns

Tancredi's POV

I found her on the pavement outside the club, with her good hand on the Escalade's door.

She did not turn around.

Behind me, inside the building, eighteen men were waiting to see if I would follow her or sit down.

I had sat down for fourteen months.

"Get in," Sabina said, without looking at me. "I'm not going to scream on a public street."

I got in the back beside her.

Remo shut his door and pulled out, and in the mirror his eyes went to me once and away.

She sat with her bandaged hand in her lap.

I had four things I could say, and none of them was good.

"Three sentences," I said. "Then you can say anything you like."

She did not answer.

"I don't run this family. My uncle does. I have not run it since my father's funeral."

The Escalade turned onto Todt Hill Road.

She had not moved.

"The text on Sunday was a lie," I said. "I wrote it because he told me to tell you the boy would be fine, and I could not write that my uncle said so."

That made five sentences.

She turned her head and looked at me for the first time.

Her brown eyes were dry.

"You let me ask you," she said.

"Yes."

"Every morning, for three years. May I go to the market. May I see my brother."

"Yes."

"You told me no, and it was never yours to say."
