Chapter 25: The Diner
Nina woke on my shoulder and made a small, offended sound.
I moved her higher and kept my eyes on Renzo.
"Say that again," I said.
"They have her in Camden. They'll hand her over any way I want her." He couldn't look at the baby. "For the piers."
Behind me, Gianni had stopped on the bottom stair.
"What did you tell them?"
"That I'd ask you." Renzo rubbed his face with both hands. "The piers aren't mine to trade. You made sure of that in March."
"Good."
"Talia, she robbed my family. She put my men in the hospital. She..."
"She lied to you," I said. "If lying to you gets a woman killed, you'll have to start with half your own table."
He flinched.
My mother came down the stairs in her robe.
She took Nina off my shoulder without asking and looked at Renzo in his wrinkled suit.
"Coffee," she said.
It wasn't a question.
We sat at the corner table by the new window while the sky went from gray to white.
Renzo told it the way he'd heard it.
The Philadelphia Don wanted a sit-down today, on neutral ground, at a diner off the Turnpike.
