Chapter 9: My Father's Letter
I held that key through the rest of Mass so hard it left a mark.
Renzo's mother left before the final blessing.
By the time I got to the steps, her car was gone.
Gianni was leaning against the Buick across the street with two coffees.
He handed me one and looked at my fist.
"What's that?"
I opened my hand.
He read the bank tag and let out a low whistle.
"That branch on Fifth Avenue," he said. "Your father used to go there every first Monday. I waited in the car."
"You waited in the car?"
"For him, I waited in the car."
The bank opened at nine on Monday.
The vault was in the basement, cold and beige, with a carpet that swallowed our footsteps.
The bank officer turned his key and left us alone with the box.
It was long and narrow, the biggest size they had.
I lifted the lid.
On top was a cream envelope with my name on it in my father's slanting hand.
Underneath that was something wrapped in an oilcloth.
Under that was a single folded sheet of yellow legal paper.
I opened the envelope first.
My hands were shaking, so Gianni held the box steady.
"Talia," my father had written. "If you're reading this, you've walked out on the Sabatinis or they've walked out on you. Either way, good."
I had to stop and breathe.
"I married you into that family because they could protect the piers and you. I never thought they could protect you from themselves. That was my mistake. I'm sorry for it."
