Chapter 11: The Treasury

The treasury was a cavern under the palace, and it glittered.

Everything the village had ever thrown into the lake lay heaped on its floor.

There were copper coins by the thousand, silver hairpins, rusted blades and bells.

There were bowls and combs and wedding rings, and rice cakes turned to stone, and a baby's carved wooden horse.

Ryugen walked in front of Shizuku with a pearl lamp in his hand.

He didn't speak until they reached the back wall.

"Three hundred years of prayers," he said. "Each thing was thrown with one. I can hear them, if I listen."

"All of them?"

"All. It is not as pleasant as it sounds."

He stopped before a low shelf cut into the rock.

On it lay a plain iron ring, worn thin, with a leather cord threaded through it.

Shizuku knew it before she touched it.

Her father had never taken it off, not for the rice or the fever or the day her mother died.

She had looked for it on his hand, at the end.

His fingers had been bare.

She picked it up, and it sat in her palm.

"He threw it in the lake," she said. "Before he died. He walked out to the jetty on his own, at night, with a fever, and the neighbors found him on the boards in the morning."
