Chapter 7: Iron
It took Kohaku and Shizuku together to haul him up the stairs to his own bed.
He was a tall man and a heavy god, and he kept trying to stand.
"I am perfectly well," he said, to the ceiling.
"Lie down."
"It is a scratch."
"Lie down, or I will sit on you."
He lay down.
Shizuku tore the front of his robe open and sucked in a breath.
The wound was low on his left side, above the hip, a round black burn the size of her palm.
The skin around it had gone grey, and the scales near it were dull and dry.
It wasn't bleeding much.
That was almost worse.
"The iron did that?" she said.
"The stake was driven into the lake, and the lake is me." He shut his eyes. "Iron is the one thing I cannot heal. Cold iron, driven deep, in a ring."
"A ring."
"Nine stakes. If they close the ring, the lake is sealed." He swallowed. "Then nothing that is mine can pass the line. Not a fish. Not a wife."
Shizuku sat down on the edge of the bed with the basin in her lap.
The water in it was from the hot spring, and she wet a cloth and began to clean the burn.
He hissed through his teeth.
