Chapter 9: Approved
The ninth request took Shizuku all night.
She wrote it six times and burned five of them in the lamp, and by dawn her fingers were black to the knuckle.
She carried the last copy up the stairs herself and stood at the foot of the dais.
He sat reading a scroll with his bandaged side propped on a cushion.
"Request nine," she said.
He put the scroll down.
"Read it."
He took the paper and unfolded it.
She had made it short.
"Take me home before the ring closes. Give me back my father's fields. Let my uncle say what he did to my face. Grounds: because I want to."
He read it once.
He read it again.
His tail, which had been lying slack along the step, rolled itself up very slowly into a coil.
"That ground is not in the form," he said.
"It's not meant to be."
"It is the first time you have asked me for anything."
"I've asked for a divorce for eight days."
"That was a request to leave. It was not a wish." He looked up, and his eyes were gold and unguarded. "This is a wish."
Shizuku folded her arms across her chest, because her heart was hammering.
