Chapter 18: Clan Day
Clan Day starts at nine, on the forty-third floor, the way it has since 1961.
That morning there were sixty chairs set out behind the walnut table.
The family sat in the front rows. My cousins from Boston, who hadn't come to my memorial. Two old aunts in hats.
The press sat at the back, behind a velvet rope, with their cameras up.
At the side table sat three men from the buyer, with a leather folder and a row of good pens.
Lionel had arrived at eight.
By the time I walked in, he was standing at the head of the table beside the vice chair, shaking hands.
He'd put on the black tie again. The widower's tie.
Paisley sat in the front row in cream silk, with my grandmother's emerald brooch at her shoulder.
She didn't look at me.
I didn't take a seat at the table.
I sat in the first row of the family, beside the housekeeper.
She had come in her church coat and refused to explain who'd invited her.
Matthias stood against the back wall by the press, arms folded, a head above everyone.
Clara wasn't there.
At five to nine the doors opened, and the detective from the Greenwich station came in and stood quietly by the wall.
Lionel saw him and smiled at me.
The vice chair tapped his glass.
"This is the annual meeting of Dragon Clan Holdings," he said. "The first item is the vote of the family trust. The holder of the Treasury Card under the last signed transfer will vote the trust's fifty-one percent."
Lionel stood.
"Thank you," he said, and his voice broke right on cue. "This is a hard day for our family."
