Chapter 17: Fia's Question
Ysmera crossed the room and sat on the window ledge beside her.
The sky behind the glass was the color of ash.
Fia held the candle in both hands, and she did not look up.
"The lords said it in the hall," she said. "They said I have no blood."
"They are fools."
"Mama. You said in front of everybody that you took me from a cottage."
"I did."
"So I'm not yours."
"You are mine."
"That isn't the same," Fia said, in her flat, careful voice.
Ysmera's throat closed.
She had braced for tears, or for rage.
She had not braced for a child who reasoned at midnight.
"Tell me what you want to know," Ysmera said. "I will not lie to you."
"Whose am I?"
There it was.
Ysmera looked at the small gray eyes, and the brown hair braided too tightly, and the stubborn jaw that was nothing like her own.
She had loved this face for twelve years before she knew whose it was.
She loved it more now, and she was afraid of how much.
