Chapter 18: Elowen's Night
Year Nineteen. Ysmera was forty-five, Aldous was forty-nine, and Mirelle was forty-three.
Elowen was nineteen, and she walked the east wing at night when she could not sleep.
She had done it since she was small.
Tonight the door of her father's study stood a hand's width open, and lamplight lay across the carpet.
She heard Mirelle's voice first, low and tired.
"She is going to ask me questions, my lord. She is not a fool."
"She is nineteen. She asks questions the way a cat asks for milk."
Elowen stopped in the shadow beside the door.
She had meant to say good night.
"The Standing is in four months," Aldous said. "I have waited eight years for it, and I have got it all arranged."
"Arranged how?"
"The night before, the keeper of the roost yard puts sleeproot in the Crown Dragon's meat."
"He sleeps through the morning, and our daughter walks into the fire."
"She cannot be burned by a beast that does not wake."
Elowen stood very still.
"My lord, you cannot drug the Crown Dragon."
"I can do whatever I like, my dear, once she is heir."
