Chapter 24: Emberhall Rises
Mirelle told it on her knees, to ten thousand people, without once raising her eyes from the stone.
She told them all of it, the cottage and the weir stair, and left out nothing that shamed her.
Then she had handed that child to the queen with her own hands.
"I let her hate the princess for twelve years," she said. "I knew, and I let her."
"I did it to save my daughter from the fire, and I did it cowardly, and I will take whatever the law gives."
Her voice cracked on the last word.
Nobody in the yard moved.
Then Fia stepped out of the fading ring.
She crossed the stone with her gray gown smoking at the hem and stopped in front of the kneeling woman.
"You hummed," she said.
Mirelle lifted her face.
"At the hold. A river song. I thought I'd made it up."
"You did not make it up, love."
Fia knelt and put both arms around her neck.
Mirelle made a sound that Ysmera would hear in her sleep for the rest of her life.
