Chapter 11: Call Me
Ailsa locked me in at nine.
She did it in front of two of my uncle's household guards, with a face like a slapped cod.
She turned the big iron key, and handed it to the older guard, and he hung it on his belt.
"Her Highness is confined," he said, to nobody.
"Her Highness can hear you," I said through the door.
I sat on my bed.
The cask was in the wardrobe behind my boots. The captain's letter was under my mattress.
I could smell Struan on my own skin.
All eleven chiefs had been sent for, to confirm the council's ruling at breakfast in the great hall. My uncle wanted it done properly. In front of everyone.
At ten past nine, there was a scrape at the bottom of my wall.
The old priest's door behind the tapestry hadn't been opened since my grandmother's time. Ailsa and I had found it when we were fourteen, and used it to sneak down to the kitchens for cake.
The tapestry bulged.
Ailsa's head came out from behind it, covered in cobwebs.
"The guards have one key," she said. "I've got the other door."
"You were ordered to lock me in."
"And I did. Very well. Nobody's ever been locked in better." She held out her hand. "Come on. You've got a breakfast to ruin."
The great hall was laid for eleven at the high table.
The chiefs sat in a long line with bacon and black pudding in front of them. My uncle sat in my father's chair in the middle.
Murdo sat at the end, as chief of the Strachans, with his arms folded.
The council's ruling lay on the cloth in front of my uncle, with his seal on it.
I walked in through the servants' door at the side of the dais.
Every head turned.
"Sorcha," my uncle said. "You're confined."
