Chapter 18: Cold Water
The morning of the swim there was frost on the boathouse roof.
The whole Guard stood along the shingle in their blue coats.
Behind them the village had come down to the water, and behind the village the crew had dragged up two casks to stand on.
Morag sat on one of them with her arms in fresh bandages, a flask of tea between her knees.
"If he drowns," she told me, "I'm going in after him, and then I'll kill him."
"You can't swim."
"I'll walk."
Struan came down to the water in a cadet's white shirt and old blue trousers.
He'd wrapped his left hand in oilskin and tape. My cord was underneath, against the skin.
He was twelve days without a drop.
His hands weren't shaking any more.
Murdo came down the shingle in the same white shirt, stretched across his shoulders.
He was a head taller, three stone heavier, and he swam every summer.
He walked past Struan close enough to knock his shoulder.
"I'll wait for you at the buoy," he said. "Bring me a dram."
"I don't drink," Struan said.
