Chapter 21: On His Knees
"How many doors?" I said.
"All of them. He started at the kirk end." Ailsa looked at the stillhouse. "And you've got enough tonight. Go home. I'll watch the drunk."
I went home.
I lay on my bed in my boots and didn't sleep.
At six I gave up and rode down to the village to find the steward's notebook.
I found a crowd instead.
It was outside a cottage at the bottom of the kirk lane, the one with the blue door.
The tall lad's family lived there.
The door was open.
Half the lane stood outside it in coats over their nightclothes.
I got off my horse and stood at the back.
Through the doorway I could see the kitchen.
The lad was sitting at the table with a plaster over his eyebrow.
His mother stood behind him with her hand on his shoulder.
His father stood at the stove with his arms crossed.
Struan was on his knees on their kitchen floor.
He was in his old grey jumper. The blue coat was nowhere.
He was white to the lips, and sober. I could see that from the lane.
