Chapter 22: Door to Door

The steward bowed to me and walked out of the gate with his two guards.

The youngest lass sat down on the cobbles.

Ailsa was looking up at the castle, where her brother lay with his ribs strapped.

"How does he know every one of them?" she said.

"The same way I did," Struan said. "Kirk records and old women."

He went up to his loft and came down with the ledger, and put it in my hands.

"He's got sixty names," he said. "So have we. He's been to their doors to frighten them. Somebody should go and tell them the truth first."

"Somebody," I said.

"You." He looked at the ground. "And me, if you'll have me carry the book. It's my writing. They should hear it from the one who wrote it."

I looked at him for a long moment.

"You carry the book," I said. "I'll do the talking."

We started that afternoon.

We went door to door for five days, from the kirk end of the village to the farthest crofts in the west glen.

At every door I said the same thing.

"Your child didn't fail their Turning. They were poisoned. Here's the proof. Come to the Stone on the moon, and bring them."
