Chapter 23: The Barley Store
I picked up the horse blanket.
It was still warm on one side, where the cask had sat against the wall pipe.
"Which way did he go?" I said.
"The loch road. With the handcart." Morag's voice was thin. "He said the castle road was full of black coats."
"Then he was taking it somewhere they'd already searched."
"The old cellar." She shut her eyes. "He said it at breakfast. Nobody looks in the same hole twice."
Hooves came down the burn road at a canter.
Ailsa rode into the yard on her grey mare and pulled up so hard the gravel sprayed.
"Your uncle's black coats just came up the castle road," she said. "Six of them, with an empty cart. Laughing."
"Struan's gone," I said. "With the cask."
Ailsa looked at the warehouse door.
Then she looked at me, and didn't make a joke.
"Get up behind me," she said.
The old boathouse is a mile along the loch road, where the drain comes out.
We found the handcart before we got there.
It was on its side in the ditch, one wheel in the water, empty.
