Chapter 27: Two Cups
Struan came down the loft ladder behind me and took the paper out of my hand.
He read it twice.
Then he gave it back to the Charter keeper, folded.
"Tell the chiefs I'll be there," he said.
The whole stillhouse floor had heard.
Nobody said anything.
Morag got up off her mattress, went to the stove, and put the porridge on.
By moonrise the whole glen was on the hill.
I'd never seen so many people at the Turning Stone.
They came up from the village and down from every side glen, with torches and lanterns and children on their shoulders.
The Guard stood in a ring round the Stone in their blue coats, eighty of them.
The eleven chiefs sat on the old stone seats in a half circle facing the ledge.
Murdo sat among them with tape across his nose.
And in front of everyone, in the first ring, stood the sixty.
Every wolfless young person on Struan's list had come.
Ailsa's brother. The youngest lass. The tall lad with the plaster still over his eyebrow. The huntsman's granddaughter, holding her mother's hand.
