Chapter 10: Ten Minutes
He did not sleep.
Rosalind found him at midnight at the window of her bedchamber, in his dressing gown, looking down at the dark lake.
Her father had gone to the guest room with a candle.
It was the first happy face she had seen on him in years.
Corbin had ridden out into the night.
The royal letter lay unfolded on her dressing table.
"Ninety days," said Lysander, without turning around.
"Then I stand in front of the King and breathe."
"He'll hear a damaged heart."
"He will hear a heart that is failing, and he will say so."
"He'll hear a heart that's been treated for three months," said Rosalind.
"And he'll see a man who walks into the hall on his own legs."
"And if it is not enough?"
She crossed the room and took his wrist.
"Ninety-two," she said. "At rest. Three weeks ago it was a hundred and twelve."
"You count everything."
"It's what I'm good at."
He turned.
His face was drawn, and his eyes were dark.
"I cannot do anything about the King," he said.
"I cannot fight Corbin. I cannot make the physician hear what I wish him to hear."
"I am only a man in a dressing gown, waiting to be examined."
"Then let's give you something to do."
"What?"
She stepped back, untied her robe, and let it slide down her arms to the floor.
His gaze dropped.
She watched the muscles of his throat move.
"The bed," she said. "On your back."
"Rosalind."
"I'm going to give you ten minutes."
He didn't move.
"Ten minutes of what?"
"Of being on top."
The color rose in his face so fast she almost laughed.
