Chapter 15: The Shelf
By the fourth day of bed rest she was ready to bite the furniture.
"Eighty-six," said Lysander, with two fingers on her wrist. "You may sit in a chair."
"I may sit in a chair."
"The library chair. The one with the cushions. I will carry you down."
"You will not carry me down the stairs."
"I carried you up."
"And you had to sit with your head between your knees."
"That was four days ago." He picked her up off the bed as if she weighed nothing.
She yelped, and then she put her arms around his neck and felt the muscle in his shoulders working under the velvet.
He had been walking the hall every morning for a week.
He had been eating, and lifting the iron poker, and putting weight on the arms she had once thought would snap.
He went down the stairs with her, one hand on the rail, and did not stop.
He did not even breathe hard.
The library at Ardmoor Hall ran the length of the east wing, two floors of dark shelves with a gallery and a rolling ladder.
It smelled of leather and dust.
He set her on her feet by the long table and kissed her forehead.
"Chair," he said. "Cushions. Rest."
"Yes, my lord."
He went very still.
"Do not say that to me in daylight when I cannot do anything about it."
"Why can't you?"
"Because I promised myself you would sit for an hour."
She smiled, and walked slowly to the far end of the room.
She stopped at the highest shelf she could reach, which held a row of old medical books in cracked calf, and ran a fingertip along the spines.
