Chapter 18: Poison
The rider stood in the great hall with snow melting off his cloak, and he did not look at either of them.
He held out two letters.
The first bore the King's seal and ordered the Duke and Duchess of Ardmoor to appear at the Winter Court in the capital in six days.
That one they had expected.
The second was in a physician's hand.
Lysander read it standing by the fire.
Rosalind watched the line of his jaw tighten, page by page.
"Read it aloud," she said.
"You will not like it."
"I'm a nurse. I read bad charts all day."
He read.
"To His Majesty's Council, from the Royal Physician. I have received a statement from the Lord Corbin Ardmoor, and a sworn account from the physician of Ardmoor Hall. They report that the Duchess of Ardmoor has been giving her husband a preparation of foxglove, a known poison, three times daily for six weeks. The Duke's recovery, they say, is a false rally, such as precedes death by that drug."
