Chapter 7: On His Knees
He came at midnight, by himself, with one hand on the wall.
Rosalind heard him in the corridor long before the door opened, a slow step and a pause, a step and a pause.
She was sitting in the armchair by her own fire in a thin silk dressing gown.
Her bare feet were tucked under her.
She had not locked the door.
It opened slowly.
Lysander stood in the frame with a candle in his free hand and his black hair loose on his shoulders.
He had walked forty paces of cold corridor, and his lips were pink.
"You did not stop me," he said.
"I didn't try very hard."
"No." His grey eyes went over her. "I noticed that."
She counted his breath from across the room.
It was quick but even.
She let herself look at him, tall and thin in his dark robe, with the candle throwing shadows over his cheekbones.
He looked like a man who had decided something.
"Shut the door," she said.
He shut it.
"Put the candle down."
He set it on the mantel.
"Now come here and kneel."
He stopped.
She watched it hit him, the word, and the heat that rose in his face.
"On the cushion," she said, and pushed the embroidered footstool toward him with her toe.
"Slowly. Hold the chair arm. Your knees are not to take your weight."
He crossed the rug.
He lowered himself in front of her, one hand on the chair arm.
He knelt between her feet with his head level with her lap.
His eyes were enormous.
His breath was coming faster, and she lifted her fingers and laid them on the side of his throat.
"A hundred and two," she said.
"Does it displease you?"
