Chapter 9: The Summons
Her father came to dinner on the eighteenth night.
Lysander sat at the head of his own table for the first time in a year.
It was a long oak table in a long cold hall.
The silver had not been polished until Bett took it in hand.
Twenty candles burned down the middle.
The Duke wore black, with a white collar, and he sat very straight.
He had gained eight pounds.
Rosalind knew because she weighed him every morning on the kitchen scale, over his protests, and wrote the number in a book.
Her father sat at her right hand, a stooped soft man with thin grey hair and his daughter's hazel eyes.
He kept looking at her.
"You look well, Rosalind," he said at last, wonderingly. "You've color. I haven't seen you with color in years."
"It's the garden air, Father."
"It's not the air."
He glanced down the table at the Duke, and his ears went pink.
"Well. I am glad of it."
Across from them sat Lord Corbin, in grey, with his gentle smile and a glass of wine he had not touched.
Lysander had invited him in a short, cold note.
