Chapter 11: Sixty-Nine
"Lie down," said Seo-wan, "and don't think about the guard."
It was the middle of the afternoon.
The Head Physician had come and gone with his bad temper and his empty basin.
The cook had sent up thin rice for the dying king.
The dying king had eaten three helpings while she watched.
Now the Hall of Quiet Rest lay dim and gold, with the sun pouring through the paper screens.
Every sound in the corridor sounded like a footstep.
She had decided that it was worth it.
The King lay on his back on the bed mat in his open robe.
His hair was spread across the pillow, and his chest rose and fell.
She stood over him in her chemise.
"What are you going to do?" he asked.
"Something I read about in a book I shouldn't have owned."
"What book?"
"My mother's. She kept it in the bottom of the herb chest."
"Was there a drawing?"
"There were several."
His mouth fell open, and she laughed and pulled the chemise over her head.
She stood naked in the daylight, which was a different thing altogether from lamplight, and she felt every inch of herself seen.
His eyes moved over her slowly and with open wonder.
"You are the most beautiful thing I have ever looked at," he said.
"You've only looked at a few things."
"I've looked at the whole palace. You win."
She knelt over him with her knees on either side of his chest, facing his feet.
"Now put your hands on my thighs," she said, "and pull me down."
