Chapter 22: The Assembly
They carried the King into the Hall of Audience at dawn on a litter hung with white silk.
Seo-wan walked beside it in her indigo skirt and white jacket, with her satchel on her shoulder and her chin up.
On either side of the long hall stood the ministers of Joseon in rows, in black hats and blue robes.
There were three hundred men with their hands in their sleeves.
No woman had ever stood on those flagstones.
She felt every eye land on her and slide off, and she kept walking.
The litter was set down at the foot of the dais.
Tae-heon lay on it propped on pillows, thin and grey-faced, with the cloth tucked hard under his arm.
He coughed into a handkerchief, and the whole hall heard it.
At the right hand of the empty throne stood Chief Councillor Heo Gyu-jin in black.
"Majesty," he said, and his voice filled the hall. "We are sorry to see you so weak."
"Councillor," whispered the King.
"The state has waited long enough. I have here a report to the throne."
He took the paper from his sleeve.
He read it aloud, in his fine slow voice.
It said the King's illness could not be cured.
