Chapter 7: The Guard at the Door
The new guard was young, broad and bored, and he had been told to keep the door open the width of a hand.
"By order of the Chief Councillor," he said. "For His Majesty's safety."
"His Majesty is sleeping," said Seo-wan.
"Then he will be safe while he sleeps."
She did not argue.
She bowed to him and went back inside.
She sat on the floor beside the bed.
The King lay with his eyes closed, his hair loose, and one corner of his mouth pressed tight.
Through the gap in the door she could see the guard's shoulder and the edge of his sword.
He could see her, too, if he turned his head.
"Pulse," said Seo-wan, loud enough to carry. "I will take Your Majesty's pulse, as I do each morning."
She laid three fingers on his wrist.
Under them, the beat was slow and strong and perfectly ordinary.
The King's eyes opened a crack.
He looked at her, and then at the cloth lying folded on the quilt near his elbow, and his eyebrows rose.
