Chapter 26: Recount
The hardware store went quiet for the second time that night.
Somebody turned the sound back down.
"Irregularities," the room parent said. "He got nineteen percent."
"He'll pay for every dollar," I said. "With what?"
Beau set me down very gently on the floor.
"Can he do that?" Gabe asked.
"He can ask," I said. "And then they count again."
Dottie hopped down off the paint counter.
"Good," she said. "Count it a hundred times. It'll still be four."
The recount was a week later, at the county elections office in Columbus.
It was a big beige room with long tables and fluorescent lights.
The paper ballots came out of sealed metal boxes, precinct by precinct.
Two counters at every table, one from each party, in matching lanyards.
They fed each stack through a machine, and then verified the stack again by hand.
Observers sat behind a rope.
I sat behind the rope with the room parent, a thermos and my ledger.
Todd sat at the other end of the rope with his lawyer.
