Chapter 22: The Renunciation
Ilvar didn't say anything.
He let go of my shoulders, walked to his wardrobe and took out his white court coat.
"Where are you going?"
"The council's still sitting. They passed that at dawn while my grandmother slept. They'll be congratulating each other over breakfast."
"Ilvar. Your sword's on the chair. Leave it there."
He looked at the sword. Then at me.
He left it on the chair.
I got dressed faster than I'd dressed since the night of the redroot.
Mam laced me into my blue gown over the belly, muttering, and I followed him down.
The round room was full.
All thirty lords at the horseshoe table, with bread and cold meat and wine at their elbows.
Corvan in the middle of the curve.
Aurelia beside him.
The Queen arrived a moment after us, leaning hard on her cane, white with fury, and sat in her chair without a word.
Nobody had expected the prince.
They stood up, all of them, a beat too late.
Ilvar didn't go to his seat. He walked into the middle of the floor, where I'd stood twice, and stopped beside the empty chair.
"My lords," he said. "I've heard your decree."
"Your Highness," said Corvan. "We'd have woken you, but it was a very early..."
"You passed a law at dawn that makes my wife a traitor for being born. You moved her trial back into a courtyard so she can't prove where she came from. And under section nine, you mean to take my children on the day they arrive, whatever she does."
