Chapter 26: In Front of Everyone

"Nobody move," Corvan said.

He had a little silver knife in his ringed hand. I'd seen him use it to cut fruit at the betrothal feast.

He wasn't holding it near my son. He didn't need to. Everyone could see it.

My eldest screamed in his arms, red-faced and furious, his tiny fists going.

Ilvar's sword was out. He didn't come forward. He couldn't, and he knew it.

"Corvan," said the Queen. "Put the child down."

"I'll put him down at the edge of this wood, Your Majesty, with a horse under me." Corvan backed a step toward the rim. "A trick of light. A half-blood's conjuring. Nobody will hang a Chancellor for a picture in the air."

"Then why are you running?" I said.

He looked at me.

For the first time since the feast, his face wasn't reasonable at all.

"Because you should have burned with your mother," he said. "I wrote a whole law for you. You were supposed to stay lost."

The whole hollow heard him say it.

I didn't move my hands off the stump.

I didn't have to.

The Heart Tree was awake now, and every root it had ever grown ran under that hollow, under the ash, under his boots.

I asked them.

The ash at his feet burst open.

Black roots came up round his ankles, his shins, his knees, and closed.

He went down hard on both knees in the snow.

The knife went flying.
