Chapter 30: Our Wedding
For a long moment nobody in Mam's kitchen said a word.
Then the Queen started to laugh.
"Both," she said. "Of course she does both. She's your daughter."
"Which of us?" said Ilvar.
"Yes," said the Queen.
Our girl squawked again, offended that nobody had picked her up.
Ilvar got there first. He lifted her out of the leaning cradle, leaves and all, and held her up in front of his face.
The little light over her fist drifted up and bumped his nose.
"Hello," he said to her, very seriously. "I'm going to have to learn a great deal of rudeness for you."
She grabbed a handful of his silver hair and pulled.
We set the wedding for Midsummer.
I didn't pick it for any reason I could say out loud.
It was my birthday. My twenty-fifth.
It was a year since the loft.
It was the night my first mother died.
"Are you sure?" Mam asked me. "That's a lot of one night."
"That's why. I want something good on it too."
Mam looked at me a long time. Then she nodded and went to find her good shawl.
Nobody in Starhold could agree on the dress, so I didn't ask them.
The court seamstress sent pale blue silk. The widow sent green linen.
Mam sewed the green into the blue, at the hem and the sleeves, sitting up three nights by the fire with her spectacles on her nose.
I wore it barefoot, with my hair down and the star-silver pin on its cord.
Ilvar wore his white coat with silver up the sleeves, the one from the Star Chapel.
The Rushford women had sewn a line of green leaves down the front of it while he slept.
He only found out when he put it on.
He looked at himself in Mam's bit of mirror and didn't take it off.
We married in the hollow, under the Heart Tree, with the blossom thick overhead and both peoples standing in the moss.
Seren married us.
I'd asked her because she was my best friend.
She'd said yes because she'd read every wedding text in the archive, in seven languages, and had opinions.
It went very badly.
She stood on a root in front of the trunk with a stack of notes, and the first thing she did was drop half of them.
The lord in the green coat picked them up for her.
"Thank you," she said. "Sorry. Right. We are gathered. We are gathered here, in the Heartwood, which in old Wood Elvish was called... no, I'll skip that. Nobody needs that."
