Chapter 6: The Roof

Seren sat on the end of my bed and stared at the shoot.

"That isn't possible," she said.

"It's a plant, Seren. Plants happen."

"Not out of star-glass. Star-glass is dead sand melted in a moon kiln. Nothing grows in it. Nothing grows in anything a star elf makes. We make light. We don't make leaves."

"So who does?"

She opened her mouth. Closed it.

"Nobody," she said. "Not anymore. The wood elves did, a long time ago. They're all dead. There was a plague."

I touched one of the tiny leaves. It was soft and cool and very real.

Under my other hand, low on my belly, something fluttered.

Too early to be a kick. I'd have told any mother in Rushford she was imagining it.

I wasn't imagining it.

"Don't tell anyone," I said.

"Aurelia counts the orbs."

"Then tell her I broke it. Clumsy half-blood."

Seren looked at me a long moment. Then she nodded.

I wrapped the orb in my spare stockings and shoved it at the bottom of my bag.

That night Ilvar came across the bridge.

I heard the knock at ten, opened the door, and found the crown prince of Starhold standing in a first-year corridor with a basket.

Every door on the floor cracked open an inch.

"Your Highness," Seren squeaked from behind me, and dropped a book on her foot.

"I've brought dinner," Ilvar said to me. "And I'm told you can't light an orb."

"Who told you that?"

"The entire palace. By noon." He held up the basket. "The roof? I know the way."

The north tower roof was flat and walled, with the whole lake spread out below it and the palace lit up on the far shore.

He'd brought bread, cold chicken, soft cheese and a jar of pickled plums.
