Chapter 6: The Hearing
I did not sleep again.
I sat at the kitchen table with my father's page in my hands until the window turned grey.
Ginny found me there at six, and she read the back of it without saying a word.
Then she took out her phone and photographed both sides.
"Copies," she said. "In three places."
"I'm not showing it to anyone yet."
"Good. Don't."
At nine, a courier in a Moon Council jacket stopped at the iron bridge and handed a sealed summons to Keith's guard.
It was addressed to me.
The Dunstan pack had filed a petition at dawn.
Maud wanted the Council to rule that Isla Sheridan had abandoned her seat and her mate, and that she should be returned to the pack's care for her own safety.
The hearing was at noon.
"They want to drag you home through a courtroom," Ginny said.
"Then I'll walk in."
The Council met in the old granary hall in Harlow Falls.
Three elders sat on a raised bench at the front, and the white-haired man from Founders' Night sat in the middle chair.
He gave me a look as I came in, and I thought I saw something in it that might have been shame.
Both packs filled the benches behind me.
Keith took the seat at the end of my row, and Ginny sat beside him.
Maud sat across the aisle in black, with Quinton on her right.
Marina was not there yet.
"The Dunstan matriarch has filed a petition," the middle elder said. "Maud Dunstan, you may speak."
Maud rose.
She spoke for ten minutes, and she was very good.
She said I had been a beloved Luna.
She said I had lost a child this year, and that nobody could be blamed for what grief does to a woman.
She said I had stormed out of a sacred feast and then slept under the roof of a stranger Alpha, which was not a thing a sound mind did.
