Chapter 15: What Bae Kept
They took the chains off at noon and gave Seok-woo a coat that wasn't his.
Two of Min's men walked him through the side gate and over the sealed courtyard, and down the long corridor to the eunuchs' hall.
The whole way they stared at the floor.
Min had told them Seok-woo was his now.
The knife was back in the strap on Seok-woo's thigh.
He felt it with every step, a small cold weight that said Min trusted him to use it.
At the end of the corridor Bae stepped out of a storeroom and took his elbow.
"Thank you, gentlemen," he said in his soft voice. "I'll see him to his lodging."
They went.
Bae drew Seok-woo into the storeroom and pushed the door shut.
For a moment the round old man simply held on to his arm and shook.
"You're alive."
"Where is he?"
"In the Hall of Mourning, praying in front of forty soldiers. He is well. I sat with him until dawn." Bae wiped his eyes with the heel of his hand. "Now sit down. There are two people you must meet."
The storeroom held lamp oil.
