Chapter 22: The Seal
Seok-woo did not draw the sword.
There was no time.
He swept the scabbard from his belt and flung it overhand across forty feet of air.
It struck the arrow's shaft as the string let go.
The arrow turned.
It went wide by the width of a hand and buried itself in the painted screen behind the Dowager's chair, quivering.
Then the hall exploded.
The archer was a thin man in the dark green of the Dowager's guard.
He dropped from the gallery rope like a cat and came down running.
Two old generals and a clerk tackled him together on the black floor.
He was Min's man.
He had been Min's since the spring.
They dragged him out by the hair.
At the foot of the dais, Hyeon, who had not moved a step, turned his head and looked at the arrow in the screen.
"That was close," he said to nobody.
His knees gave way.
Seok-woo got to him first.
He was across the floor with his side tearing, and he caught Hyeon before he fell.
The whole court saw the Crown Prince of the kingdom collapse into the arms of a man in a servant's coat.
They heard what he said.
"I'm all right. I'm all right."
"I know."
"Don't let go."
"I won't."
Nobody laughed.
Nobody said a single word against it.
They gave Min his sentence in the courtyard at noon, in the cold sun, in front of every officer of the capital.
The Dowager read only the sentence from her chair.
The cup.
His lands to the families he had ruined.
His name struck from the clan rolls.
He had no sling now, and no coat.
He stood in a white shift with his silver beard combed.
