Chapter 23: The Coronation

Yeon-hwa tied Seok-woo's topknot herself, and complained the whole time.

"Hold still. You've got a head like a boulder. How does anyone dress you? Is it Bae?"

"It was Bae."

"It shows."

She stood on a stool behind him in the dark before dawn, her cropped hair sticking up and the brass hairpin pushed into it.

She drew the black cord tight.

Seok-woo had been given a commander's coat, dark blue with a tiger on the chest, and a belt stiff with silver.

It had been his father's size.

It fit him through the shoulders.

"There," said his sister. She jumped down and squinted at him with her head on one side. "You look like him."

"Don't."

"I mean it as a good thing."

"I know."

She hit his arm, hard, on the side of the old scar.

Then she threw her arms around his waist, and they stood like that for a minute in the lantern light.

"Don't die again," she said into his belt.

"I'll try."

"Try harder."

The Hall of Government was hung with yellow silk.

The ministers stood in nine rows by rank, in their court dress.

The Dowager sat in her chair at the side, and the clerks held their brushes.

At the foot of the dais, in a plain mourning coat with his hat off, stood Bae.

His arm was in a sling and his round face was wet.
