Chapter 13: Noon at the Scaffold
The chamberlain came for them at the eleventh bell, with eight guards and a folded paper.
"His Majesty commands the Grand Duke to attend the execution of his officers," he said. "The Lady may remain above."
Ilarion stood up from the table.
He did not ask what the charge was.
Iseult watched his hands close slowly at his sides and open again.
"What is the charge?" she asked, since he would not.
"Bearing arms within the capital walls, my lady, without the Emperor's leave."
"They are the Duke's escort."
"They are rebels."
"They are three men who carried a seal," said Iseult.
She went to the trunk at the foot of the bed and found her gloves.
Then she pulled her hair back, pinned it hard, and took the heavy Valcour signet ring from the cord around her neck.
She put it on her thumb.
Ilarion looked at the ring and then at her face.
"You will stay here," he said quietly.
"No."
"Iseult."
"You have no sword, and I have a seal," she said. "Let me use the one thing I'm good at."
