Chapter 16: Hands Over Your Head
By the end of summer a grey patrol of the Ninth sat on the north road every dawn, watching her gate, and did nothing.
The valley had sold to the forest-edge stone every week since spring, and the cart had never come back to her bin.
Aoi had decided they could watch the farmhouse as long as they liked, because tonight the curtains were drawn and the door was locked.
She took the green scarf down from the hook by the lamp.
Caelrin stood in the middle of the bedroom in his shirtsleeves, looking at it.
"You said next time," he said.
"I did."
"I have been thinking about little else since the spring."
"Good," Aoi said. "Take your shirt off."
He took it off.
He dropped it on the floor without looking at it.
He stood bare to the waist in the lamplight, long and lean and scarred, with his ears already tinged pink.
She walked around him, once, slowly, with the scarf trailing from her hand.
"On the bed. On your back."
He lay down on the yellow quilt.
"Hands up."
He lifted his arms above his head and laid his wrists against the iron rail, crossed, without being told how.
She sat on the edge of the bed and wound the scarf around his wrists, once, twice, and tied it in a bow.
"Can you get out?"
He tugged once.
The knot slid loose at the pull, exactly as hers had.
"Yes."
"Then don't," she said, and retied it.
His breath caught.
She heard it, and the heat in her stomach flared.
"Good," she said, trying the word out. "That's good. You're being so good."
He shut his eyes.
A flush spread down his throat and over his chest, and she watched it go with deep, slow delight.
She had imagined this since the spring too.
She straddled his hips, still dressed in her nightgown, and rested her hands flat on his ribs.
