Chapter 5: The Stall Door
The driver wore a farmer's smock over soldier's boots, and he never once looked at her face.
"Royal Buyers, miss," he said, when she came down to the gate in her overalls with her hair half braided.
"Early pickup. Factor's orders. A good crop, I hear."
"How did you hear?"
"The Factor hears everything."
He set a small tin of gold on top of the bin and tipped his cap.
The cart rolled away toward the north road with the whole day's turnips under its canvas.
Aoi watched it go, and the back of her neck prickled.
She counted the coins in the tin.
It was triple what the game had ever paid.
When she turned around, Caelrin was standing on the porch in his trousers with his arms folded and his jaw.
"He wore a Legion boot," he said.
"I saw."
"I do not like it."
"Neither do I." She climbed the steps and put her hand flat on his bare chest. "But I don't know what it means yet, and neither do you."
"That is what frightens me."
"Then stop thinking," Aoi said.
"I cannot."
"I can help."
His eyes narrowed.
She took him by the wrist and walked him across the yard to the barn.
It was an old wooden barn that smelled of hay and warm animals, with one big stall at the back and a half door of grey boards.
Biscuit looked up from her nest in the corner and went right back to sleep.
Aoi shut the big door behind them and dropped the bar.
Sun came through the slats in thin gold stripes, and dust turned in it.
"Here?" he said.
"Here."
"Your hen is present."
"She's asleep, and she's seen worse."
She turned him by the shoulders and pressed him back until his shoulder blades touched the stall door.
Then she pulled her shirt off over her head.
His eyes dropped to her breasts, and his hands twitched at his sides.
"Touch me," she said.
He did.
He cupped both breasts in his palms, and ran his thumbs over the tips until they hardened, and then he bent his head and took one in his mouth.
She gasped and held his head against her.
He sucked, and licked, and sucked again, and a wet heat built low in her belly.
"Caelrin. I want you to take me against this door."
His head came up.
"From behind?"
"From behind. Like that. Hold on to me."
"You will have to tell me how."
"I will."
She stepped out of her overalls and underwear and left them on the straw.
She turned her back to him and put both hands on the top of the stall door, with her feet planted wide.
The wood was warm from the sun.
She heard him undo his belt, and her pulse went wild.
