Chapter 16: What He Read

The roof garden had a low stone wall and a row of bare maples in planters.

The whole frozen city lay below it.

Benedict stood at the wall with his back to me and his hands flat on the stone.

I stayed ten feet away, with my coat on and my arms folded.

"Start talking," I said.

"I was thirty-one," said Benedict. "I was a hospital billing coder in Columbus, Ohio."

I didn't say anything.

I think my heart stopped for about a second.

"I died on I-71 in a rainstorm," he said. "A truck jackknifed. I had my phone on the dashboard, with the last tab open. A book called His Moonmarked Mate."

"Chapter?"

"Nine." His mouth twisted. "My second read. I'd finished it once the week before. My sister sent it to me as a joke."

"You're lying."

"Ask me something. I'll tell you whether it's in the book."

I thought.

"What did Lena's mother do for a living?"

"Not in the book. She's never mentioned." He turned around. "Ask me about the chapter titles."

"Chapter one."

"Sold. Chapter two, 'The Alpha Speaks.' Chapter three, 'Contract of Blood.' Chapter four..."
