Chapter 21: What I Choose

It rained all night.

By two in the morning, Lena was in a locked staff room at Mercy Lakeshore.

Six wolves stood in the hallway, and her lunch went cold in front of her.

She had listened to the whole story twice.

At the end, she had said, "Fine. I'll be there," and gone back to charting.

I found Brant on the roof of the hospital's parking structure, standing in the rain with his shirt soaked through.

He didn't turn around.

"You've been looking at that tower for an hour," he said.

"How do you know?"

"You've been looking at it since Lisle House." He glanced at me then, and the rain ran down the scar through his eyebrow. "I'm not stupid, Cas."

"I never thought you were."

"Then say it."

I stood next to him at the edge of the roof.

The city was a smear of orange under the clouds.

I had spent weeks thinking that I would know when the moment came.

I hadn't.

I'd had to decide, with nothing to read.

"You said you'd ask me again after the moon," I said. "With no moon in the way."
