Chapter 10: The Mate Mark

Bram stepped in front of me and the wardens' flashlights hit his back.

"Out," he said.

"There was a report," said Sabrina. "Two students in the stacks after hours. A warden case, no less, in a girl's blouse."

"The report is closed. I'm head of the wardens, and she is my case." His voice did not rise. "Every one of you can go back to bed, or explain to my father why you're awake."

Nobody breathed.

One by one the wardens lowered their lights and filed out.

Sabrina was last.

She looked at me past his shoulder, still smiling.

"Friday," she said. "The hearing. Bring your charm."

The door shut behind her.

I buttoned my blouse with shaking fingers.

"She saw everything," I said.

"Let her." Bram turned around, and his eyes were wolf-gold. "Come with me."

"Where?"

"Somewhere I can lock the door."

The observatory tower sat above the east wing, a round stone room with a brass telescope under a glass dome.

Moonlight came through the dome in a long pale bar across a heap of old cushions on the floor.

Bram shut the door and slid the iron bolt.

He stood with his back against it, breathing hard.

"My wolf has a word for you," he said. "I've been refusing to say it for two weeks."

"Say it."

"Mate."

My knees almost went.

"That's not just a word," I said.

"No. It's a claim." His voice was rough. "I can't make it stop. I don't want it to stop."

I walked across the room, took his hand and put it on my heart.

"Then stop fighting it," I said.

He kissed me.

It was slower than the library, and it undid me worse.

He peeled my blazer off and my blouse after it, and when his mouth found the gold lines on my collarbone they lit up bright under his lips.
