Chapter 6: The Storm

Bram let go of my wrist all at once.

The gold lines faded off my arm and off his, one curve at a time, and the last of them went out under his cuff.

A group of first-years came around the bend above us, laughing and shoving.

He stepped away from me and tugged a black leather glove over his right hand.

"Slipped on the moss," he said to nobody. "Mind the fourth step from the top."

He said nothing else to me for two days.

He still kept ten paces, but he kept them with his eyes on the ground, and when I sat down in class he picked the seat farthest away that still met the rule.

I told the dean, truthfully, that the pin had flickered when I fell.

I did not tell her where the lights had gone.

On the third night, a storm came in off the water.

Posy shut the shutters and lit a candle, and said the shadow-walkers always went quiet in storms because the dark got too loud.

At midnight I couldn't sleep, so I went to the window and pushed one shutter open.

The rain was coming down in sheets across the dark lawn.

At the edge of the cliff, at the far end of the grounds, a tall figure was walking toward the boathouse with no coat on.

I knew his shoulders.

"Bram," I said to the glass.

He wasn't supposed to be out there.

He was supposed to be ten paces from me.
