Chapter 15: Fae Law
The Treaty is twelve pages of vellum, and I read it that morning the way I read every statement in a magistrates' court.
I read it for what was left out.
Hob's kitchen table was warm, and he put a plate of toast at my elbow without being asked.
"Clause Nine," I said, to the page. "A fae who deceives a human by silence or true word is put out through the Door."
"Yes, miss."
"Clause Three. The Witness's walls are her own."
"Yes, miss."
"Clause Four. 'His bed.' I've worn that one thin."
"You have," said Hob, delighted.
"There's no Oak in it."
His keys stopped jangling.
"Twelve pages," I said, "and the tree they all swear by isn't mentioned once."
"That is a very good thing to have noticed, miss."
"Is it important?"
"I'm not permitted to say what's important." He looked at the toast. "I'm allowed to say it's a very good thing to have noticed."
I put down the vellum.
